Prediabetes: Quiet Signs, the Blood Test and Next Steps

Quick answer

Prediabetes means blood sugar is higher than usual but not yet in the diabetes range, and it often has no clear symptoms. A blood test finds it: an A1C of 5.7% to 6.4%, or a fasting glucose of 100 to 125 mg/dL. About 98 million US adults have it, and over 80% do not know. Glyco Reset is not a test or a treatment.

The quiet part01

What are the prediabetes symptoms?

Often, none. Mayo Clinic says prediabetes usually has no clear symptoms (Mayo Clinic, Prediabetes).

That is the whole problem. CDC estimates about 98 million US adults, more than one in three, have prediabetes, and over 80% of them do not know (CDC, About the Prediabetes Risk Test).

Feeling fine tells you little. Mayo Clinic lists symptoms for type 2 diabetes that can creep in slowly: thirst, frequent urination, tiredness, blurred vision, slow-healing sores and tingling in the hands or feet (Mayo Clinic, Type 2 diabetes). If any of those sound familiar, book a visit. They do not prove anything, and a missing symptom does not rule anything out.

Who is at risk02

Who is more likely to develop prediabetes?

Risk grows with several everyday factors, and one person can have more than one.

Mayo Clinic names excess weight, a large waist, being inactive and age over 35 among the risk factors (Mayo Clinic, Prediabetes). CDC offers a short online risk quiz.

01

Body and waist

Extra weight and a large waist are on Mayo Clinic's list.

02

Activity

Low movement is a listed risk factor.

03

Age

Mayo Clinic cites age over 35.

The CDC quiz is only screening. In its words, only a blood test gives an official diagnosis (CDC, About the Prediabetes Risk Test).

The test03

Which prediabetes blood test finds it?

Three lab tests can flag prediabetes. Any one result in its band is a reason for your doctor to look closer (NIDDK, Diabetes Tests & Diagnosis).

Prediabetes range by test, adults who are not pregnant
Blood testPrediabetes rangeNotes
A1C5.7% to 6.4%Three-month average; no fasting needed (CDC, A1C Test for Diabetes and Prediabetes)
Fasting glucose100 to 125 mg/dLTaken after a stretch without food
2-hour tolerance test140 to 199 mg/dLMeasured two hours after a sugary drink

With prediabetes, NIDDK says testing is usually repeated about once a year (NIDDK, Diabetes Tests & Diagnosis). The full table of bands is on the A1C guide.

The term04

Is insulin resistance the same as prediabetes?

Not exactly. Insulin resistance describes cells that answer insulin poorly, while prediabetes is a lab result.

NIDDK explains that in diabetes the body makes too little insulin or does not use it properly (NIDDK, What Is Diabetes?). Doctors label prediabetes from blood numbers like those in the table above.

We found no source in our set that gives a home test or a cutoff for insulin resistance itself. If someone offers one, ask your doctor what it measures.

One regulatory fact is worth knowing. FDA allows only a qualified claim linking chromium picolinate to insulin resistance, and calls that link "highly uncertain" (NIH ODS, Chromium fact sheet for professionals).

After the result05

What happens after a prediabetes blood test?

Usually a plan built on lifestyle, plus a retest date. Mayo Clinic describes lifestyle change as the main step, and a supplement is not a substitute (Mayo Clinic, Prediabetes).

  1. Ask what your number means

Get the test, the value and the band in writing.

  2. Agree on a retest date

NIDDK says about once a year for prediabetes (NIDDK, Diabetes Tests & Diagnosis).

  3. Review food and movement

Ask your doctor or a dietitian for a plan that fits your life.

  4. List everything you take

Include vitamins, herbs and drops. Your pharmacist can check them against your medicines.

The label06

Can Glyco Reset help with prediabetes?

No source we read shows that Glyco Reset helps with prediabetes, and no study has tested the bottle.

The label lists chromium 0.7 mcg and one 200 mg blend of twenty-one names, with no amount for any single name. The brand's wording is "healthy glucose utilization*", a starred statement.

The chromium trial NIH describes used 1,000 mcg a day, about 1,400 times the label amount, and later studies were inconsistent (NIH ODS, Chromium fact sheet for professionals). Compare the claims with the evidence below.

  1. Label front“Health Supplement*”A category line whose star leads to the FDA statement. It does not claim the drops treat anything, and no Glyco Reset study is cited. (FDA, Structure/Function Claims)
  2. Brand wording“Healthy glucose utilization*”That is the brand's own blood-sugar positioning, starred. No study of this product tests it, and NIH, ADA and NCCIH describe the evidence for supplements and blood sugar as weak or unproven. Nor can a supplement be sold to treat diabetes. (NCCIH, Diabetes and Dietary Supplements) (ADA, Vitamins, Minerals, and Supplements (diabetes.org)) (FDA, Illegally Sold Diabetes Treatments)
  3. Common search“Is Glyco Reset good for diabetes?”No label line calls it a diabetes medicine, and FDA has acted against products sold that way. Stay on prescribed medicine and ask your doctor. (FDA, Illegally Sold Diabetes Treatments) (MedlinePlus, Metformin)
  4. Common search“Does Glyco Reset kill parasites?”Neither the label nor any source or study we found says this. Unsupported claims are not repeated here. (FDA, 6 Tip-offs to Rip-offs (health fraud))
  5. BadgesGMP, FDA facility and similar graphicsThe brand's image set contains these marks, yet the label names no certifier. FDA does not approve supplements, and cGMP is a rule makers must follow rather than a badge. (FDA, Questions and Answers on Dietary Supplements) (21 CFR Part 111 (eCFR), Supplement cGMP)

Claims as printed on the bottle and as people search for them. Health claims need competent and reliable scientific evidence (FTC, Health Products Compliance Guidance).

Safety07

When should prediabetes concerns go to a doctor?

Sooner than you think. Thirst, tiredness or blurred vision deserve a blood test, not a guess.

If you already take diabetes medicine, keep taking it and show your doctor and pharmacist every supplement label (MedlinePlus, Metformin). A reading of 70 mg/dL or lower is low blood sugar (Mayo Clinic, Hypoglycemia). Fainting, a seizure or severe confusion is an emergency: call 911.

  1. See a doctor soonMore thirst than usual, frequent urination, unexplained tiredness, blurred vision, or shakiness that keeps following meals.
  2. See a doctor the same dayMore than one reading at 70 mg/dL or lower, or low-sugar signs that keep returning.
  3. Stop and call your doctorAfter starting any supplement: a racing or uneven heartbeat, new swelling, a severe headache, yellowing skin or eyes, or dark urine.
  4. Emergency room or 911Fainting, a seizure, severe confusion, trouble breathing, or low blood sugar that stays down after treatment.

Signs drawn from public health and clinic sources (Mayo Clinic, Hypoglycemia) (MedlinePlus, Low blood sugar) (LiverTox, Green Tea). This list is not complete, and a supplement is never a reason to wait.

FAQ08

Prediabetes questions people ask

Can you feel prediabetes?

Usually not. Mayo Clinic says prediabetes often has no clear symptoms, which is why CDC finds that over 80% of adults with it do not know. Thirst, tiredness or blurred vision can have other causes. A blood test is the only way to know.

What A1C counts as prediabetes?

An A1C of 5.7% to 6.4% falls in the prediabetes range, per CDC and NIDDK. Below 5.7% is typical, and 6.5% or higher is the diabetes range. Your doctor decides what a single result means and when to retest.

Is a fasting glucose of 110 prediabetes?

A fasting glucose of 110 mg/dL falls inside the 100 to 125 mg/dL prediabetes band on the NIDDK table. One result is not a diagnosis, so ask your doctor about a confirming test and a retest date.

Does prediabetes always turn into type 2 diabetes?

No source we read says always. Mayo Clinic says that without lifestyle changes the risk of progressing to type 2 diabetes is high. Ask your doctor what steps fit your situation and when to retest.

How many Americans have prediabetes?

CDC says about 98 million US adults, more than one in three, have prediabetes. NIDDK gives 96 million adults from 2019 data. The two figures come from different years, so quote each with its own date.

Is there a home test for insulin resistance?

We found no source in our set that describes one. Doctors use A1C, fasting glucose and the tolerance test for prediabetes. If a product claims to measure insulin resistance, ask a clinician what it actually shows.

Should I take Glyco Reset if my A1C is 5.9%?

Talk to your doctor first. An A1C of 5.9% is in the prediabetes band, and no study has tested Glyco Reset. The label lists chromium 0.7 mcg and a 200 mg blend with no split. Keep any prescribed medicine.
